When all is silent (1995) continues my investigation into the worlds of abstract and 'known' sounds as well as that important area in between. For me the fascination of composing musique concréte is not merely in dealing with the very woof and warp of music - sound - but is in having ready access (perhaps too ready) to the 'dramatic' (cinematic) and the symbolic. The dramatic in particular can create those exigencies and tranquilities, those preparations, tensions and resolutions of which music is constructed.
With thanks to Catriona Hutchinson (singer), Jo Towler (horn), Melanie Marshall, Simon Atkinson and Catherine Baker for their help in collecting source material.
When all is silent was commissioned by the Edinburgh Contemporary Arts Trust (ECAT) and realised in the University of Edinburgh Electroacoustic Music Studios. Material costs subsidised by The Scottish Arts Council.
